Finger Splints

Our fingers are among the most important parts of the body. They seem tinier than other parts, but an injury to them affects almost everything you do. When your finger has an accident or injury, your doctor or physiotherapist may suggest you use a finger splint.

Finger splints are often provided by occupational therapists to people with finger joint problems in musculoskeletal disorders, and are designed to help support the finger and maintain joint positioning under the direction of a healthcare professional.

These small finger splints are designed to help support the finger and hand and to help maintain joint position while you follow the plan your healthcare professional has set.

Common types of finger splints:

Finger splints come in four different varieties:

Thumb Spica Splints: Thumb Spica Splint is a convenient device designed to immobilise the thumb in the abduction (functionally neutral) position. Designed to support the CMC joint and immobilise the MCP joint of the thumb without inhibiting hand movement.

Mallet finger splint: Mallet Finger Splint is a very simple device, designed to maintain the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint in the dorsiflexion or functional position. Immobilisation of these phalanges may assist in managing fractures or dis-functionality of the DIP joint, under medical guidance.

Finger Cot Splint: The Finger Cot splint is designed to offer a firm protective covering for an injured, burned, broken, surgically operated, or recovering finger. It offers a practical and affordable option for a range of finger conditions where a healthcare professional has recommended protection. Different varieties are available to accommodate different finger lengths.

Finger extension splint: A finger extension splint is designed to restrain and safeguard a finger following metacarpal damage, displacement, or surgery.

What finger splints are designed to do

An orthotic is a term used by medical practitioners to describe a brace, splint, or similar device. Finger splints are designed to immobilise joints to help protect them and to help support the finger while it recovers from injury. They are designed to help support appropriate joint position during wear.
