Prolonged computer use is becoming one of the leading causes of neck pain. People today are very interested in technology, which has led to a significant rise in desk-bound jobs. We spend a lot of time gazing down, whether we're using our phones, playing video games, watching TV, or studying. How many hours a day do you spend looking up?

You may be surprised to learn that the average weight of our cranium is 4-6 kilograms. With prolonged neck flexion, i.e., looking down, gravity begins to take effect and slowly positions our head further forward than it should naturally be. Research has found that for every inch our head is forward, an additional 10 pounds is placed on the spine.

This places pressure on the joints, muscles, and ligaments; therefore, it is no surprise that neck discomfort is the second most common issue that chiropractors address after low back issues. Frequently, the two areas go hand in hand, as a poor posture in the upper quarter can affect the lower quarter and vice versa.

Discomfort in the cervical region of the spine can be caused by several factors. Excessive or traumatic movement of the neck, for example, whiplash resulting from a car accident, can cause quite severe pain. Long-term, chronic issues with the neck can also arise.

Neck supports can be used to provide support for the neck and related areas.. Neck braces and soft collars are designed to provide support and help carry the weight of the head, thereby reducing strain on the neck muscles. A soft collar can also be helpful for providing support after a whiplash-type incident.

Whiplash injuries most often occur following a car accident when the vehicle decelerates rapidly. This causes the head to move forward very quickly in relation to the body. This can stretch the muscle and ligament tissue at the back of the neck, causing significant discomfort. Neck support is excellent at reducing stress on the ligaments and muscle tissue.

The extent of your condition will determine the type of assistance you receive, which is why obtaining a professional diagnosis is necessary. After an injury, paramedics will help stabilize the neck. A complete X-ray or scan can help determine the severity of the injury. A neck collar may be used in less severe cases or due to wear and tear. It is comfortable but limits movement.
